Cold Plunge & Sauna Therapy in Orange County
Cold water immersion and heat therapy have moved well beyond wellness trends — both have a growing body of research supporting their effects on mood, stress resilience, nervous system regulation, and physical recovery. Used individually or together as contrast therapy, cold plunge and sauna create a powerful physiological reset that many clients in intensive mental health treatment find genuinely supportive.
At South Orange County Wellness, cold plunge and sauna therapy are available as optional wellness enhancements for enrolled clients. Sessions are guided and monitored — you set the parameters, and staff are present throughout. Located in San Juan Capistrano minutes from Dana Point, everything is on-site and accessible alongside your clinical programming.

What the Science Says About Cold & Heat Therapy
Cold water immersion triggers a cascade of neurological and physiological responses — including a significant release of norepinephrine (up to 300% above baseline in some studies), dopamine, and endorphins. These are the same neurotransmitters that are frequently depleted in depression and anxiety. The cold also activates the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in nervous system regulation and the stress response.
Sauna therapy works through a complementary mechanism — heat exposure promotes cardiovascular circulation, relaxes the musculoskeletal system, and has been associated with reduced depressive symptoms in several studies. A 2018 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that sauna use was associated with significantly reduced risk of depression and psychosis.
Together, cold plunge and sauna create what's often called contrast therapy — alternating between cold and heat to produce a powerful physiological reset that many people describe as one of the most effective tools for stress regulation they've encountered.
Cold Plunge & Sauna — What Each Does
Cold plunge and sauna work through different mechanisms — and complement each other in ways that make contrast therapy more powerful than either alone.
Cold Plunge
- Triggers norepinephrine and dopamine release — supporting mood and focus
- Activates the vagus nerve, supporting parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) tone
- Builds stress tolerance through deliberate, controlled discomfort
- Reduces inflammation — particularly relevant for clients with chronic stress
- Sharpens mental clarity and alertness in the hours following immersion
- Builds a sense of accomplishment and agency — particularly valuable in recovery
Sauna Therapy
- Promotes deep muscular relaxation and reduced physical tension
- Improves cardiovascular circulation and heart rate variability
- Associated with improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia
- Releases endorphins and growth hormone during heat exposure
- Linked to reduced depressive symptoms in multiple published studies
- Supports detoxification through sweat and improved lymphatic flow
Contrast therapy — alternating between cold plunge and sauna — amplifies the circulatory and neurological effects of both. The rapid shift between vasoconstriction (cold) and vasodilation (heat) creates a pumping effect throughout the cardiovascular system, and the neurological contrast between activation and relaxation produces a reset that many clients describe as unlike anything else they've experienced.
Cold Plunge & Sauna During Mental Health Treatment
One of the most consistent findings in mental health research is that the nervous system — not just the mind — is central to recovery. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma all dysregulate the autonomic nervous system in ways that affect sleep, energy, emotional reactivity, and physical health.
Cold plunge and sauna therapy work directly at the nervous system level. Cold exposure trains the body to tolerate and regulate the stress response — building the same distress tolerance that therapy is working to develop, through a physiological route. Sauna creates deep relaxation and activates the parasympathetic nervous system in ways that many clients in high-stress, high-activation treatment periods find profoundly grounding.
Beyond the neurological dimension, there's something therapeutically significant about doing something hard, surviving it, and feeling better afterward. For clients whose PTSD, depression, or anxiety has made them feel disconnected from their own bodies, cold plunge in particular can be a powerful experience of agency and embodied resilience.
What a Session Looks Like
Sessions are guided — you won't be dropped into a cold plunge or sauna and left alone. Staff are present to support you, help you pace yourself, and ensure a safe, positive experience.
Intake & Orientation
Before your first session, staff will walk you through the process, review any health considerations, and help you understand what to expect — including how cold and how long is appropriate for your starting point.
Sauna First
Most contrast therapy protocols begin with sauna — typically 10 to 15 minutes — to warm the body and prepare the cardiovascular system for the cold transition. You set the pace.
Cold Plunge
Cold immersion typically lasts 2 to 5 minutes depending on your tolerance and experience level. Staff guide your breathing and help you stay present through the initial shock response — which is where much of the benefit happens.
Contrast Cycles
Depending on the session format, you may complete multiple rounds of hot-cold cycling. This is where the contrast therapy effect is most pronounced — and most people find each subsequent round easier than the last.
Rest & Integration
Sessions end with a period of rest and warming. Most clients report feeling calm, clear, and energized in the hours following — a state that complements afternoon therapy sessions particularly well.
No Recovery Time
There's no downtime after a cold plunge or sauna session. You can return to your clinical programming, work, or other activities immediately. Many clients find the post-session state ideal for group therapy or individual sessions.
How Cold Plunge & Sauna Fits Into Your Program
Cold plunge and sauna therapy are available to clients enrolled in our PHP and IOP programs as optional wellness enhancements. They're particularly well-suited for clients experiencing high stress activation, physical tension, sleep difficulties, or emotional dysregulation — and for those who want a structured, body-based way to complement their clinical work.
Sessions are not appropriate for everyone. Clients with certain cardiovascular conditions, Raynaud's disease, or other relevant health considerations will be screened before participating. Staff are present throughout every session and set safety as the first priority.
