Getting Mental Health Treatment in Orange County Shouldn’t Be This Hard

Here’s something most people don’t know: Orange County has one of the worst mental health treatment gaps in California.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than 1 in 5 Americans live with a mental illness in any given year. But data from the California Health Interview Survey shows that only about half of Orange County residents who need mental health care actually receive it. Research from UCI’s School of Social Ecology and the OC Health Care Agency points to a real shortage of licensed clinicians throughout South OC — fewer psychologists per capita here than almost anywhere else in the state.

That means a lot of people in this community are waiting, going without, or settling for care that isn’t really working.

South Orange County Wellness exists because that’s not good enough.

Programs That Fit Your Life

Getting the right level of mental health treatment matters. Too little support can limit progress, while too much structure may feel difficult to maintain. That’s why we offer three distinct levels of care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Orange County

PHP is our most intensive program — five days a week, with structured group therapy, individual sessions, and clinical support built into every day. It’s the right fit if you’re navigating acute symptoms, coming out of a crisis, or transitioning from an inpatient stay and need a strong foundation before stepping down.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Orange County

IOP gives you real, structured mental health treatment in Orange County without putting your life completely on hold. You’ll come in three to five days a week for group therapy, individual sessions, and skills-based work — then go home. It works well for people stepping down from PHP and for those starting treatment who need more than once-a-week therapy.

Research backs it up: a 2023 analysis of over 2,300 PHP and IOP patients found a 53% reduction in depression severity and 50% reduction in anxiety severity among those who completed structured programs.

Individual Therapy and Ongoing Care

For those starting out or maintaining progress after a higher level of care, our individual therapy program provides consistent, one-on-one support through therapy and psychiatric services. It’s ongoing, intentional care — not just maintenance.

What We Treat

We provide mental health treatment in Orange County for the full range of conditions that bring people into care. Our programs address:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • OCD
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions

Not sure if what you’re experiencing fits one of these? That’s okay — it’s a common starting point. Our admissions team can help you figure out what level of care makes the most sense.

How We Work, Clinical Mental Health Treatment in Orange County

Every person who comes to South Orange County Wellness gets a clinical team that actually knows them.

Our mental health treatment is evidence-based, which means the approaches we use have real research behind them. It’s also genuinely individualized — we don’t run everyone through the same program and call it done. What helps someone working through complex trauma looks very different from what helps someone managing bipolar disorder or OCD. We take that seriously.

At every level — PHP, IOP, or ongoing therapy — your care includes group sessions, individual therapy, and skills work. Your team checks in on your progress regularly and adjusts when something isn’t working. That’s just what good care looks like.
